Mood Board Of Our Song

These are our a few things I thought of when I listened
to the song:

The Kooks - Sway Lyrics

Say whatever you have to say, I'll stand by you.
Do whatever you have to do, to get it out and not become a reaction memory
To hurt the ones you love you know you never meant to but you do
oh yeah you do

Be whoever you have to be, I won't judge you
Sing whatever you have to sing to get it out and not become a recluse about how to come out
I know you never meant to but you do
oh but you do

Still I need your sway, because you always pay for it
And I, and I need your soul because your always soulful
And I and I need your heart, because your always in the right places

And take whatever you have to take, you know I love ya
come however you have to come, and get it out and get it out

Tttttake it out on me, take it out on me
I'll give it you all, I give it you all,i give it
I give you all I give it you all, yes I will give it you all

Cause I need your sway, because you always pay for it
And I, and I need your soul because your always soulful
And I and I need your heart, because your always in the right places

Oh yes I will, I will give it you all

Still I need your sway, because you always pay for it
And I, and I need your soul because your always soulful
And I and I need that heart, because your always in the right places.

The Kooks Music Video

Watching The Kooks ‘Sway’ has showed me how the band technically construct their music videos.

1)By opening the video with a reasonably long still shot of a beach the mood and scene for the rest of the video is set.

2) Emphasis is particularly put on lead singer, Luke Pritchard.

3) Other shots of importance appear to be close ups of faces to bring through emotions.

4) The fast cuts contrast with the slow beat yet make the video flow well as they are in sync with the track and the facial expressions of the band.

5) Towards the end the (approx 10 secs ) shot of Luke walking whilst singing the songs chorus whilst debris falls down around him brings forwards the meaning of the lyrics.

Ideas We Found From Other Music Videos

PARACHUTE - THE MESS I MADE

Although this isn't something overly effective or difficult we like the idea of extreme close up
of the lead singer to convey the emotions of the lyrics.

KINGS OF LEON - USE SOMEBODY

As The Kooks are of a borderline similar genre and 'Use Somebody' is of a similar tone to 'Sway' we liked the idea of included a birdeye view of a lit up city. It would obviously be on a smaller scale to this one but the idea of using lights as part of our video is one we got from this:

Song Choices

A laid back acoustic song that would be effective as we could use features of narrative for example flashbacks. The lyrics are meaningfull and would give us alot of filming options. Although it isn't one of there most popular songs, it could work well.

Complete contrast with 'Sway', 'Naive' is arguably The Kooks most recognisable song and we felt that the up beat melody would enable us to create a feel good video to compliment the song. The band are a good band to choose because they are in the mainstream but still remain in the indie genre.

The Kooks

We have chosen The Kooks as we wanted a band from the UK because we thought we
could make a video more effectively if it is set in the place the band is from. Not only are we very familiar with the bands work but the lyrics are very simple to comvey through narrative.

Kerrang

Kerrang was primarily a magazine for rock and heavy metal fans.

In 2000 it launched Kerrang radio followed by a music channel and online forum in 2001

Followed by a Kerrang tour in 2004.

Kerrang is a good example of a company who are using differant outlets to target audiences of differant ages.

My Space

Websites such as Myspace let audiences watch videos and listen to music. It helps to lauch unsigned artists and promote signed musicians at the same time. Younger users in particular find the site appealing because they can brown music by genre such as 'hip hop' or 'classical'.
The number of hits per page on Myspace indicate what's popular to record companies.
There is also an interactive feature in that you can contact an artist or leave feedback on the forums. In 2002 it was launched as a social network sight but since the music aspect of the website has overshadowed the personal use. So much so that Myspace Records has been launched. It is basically Myspaces own record label for unsigned talent that has been popular on the site.

An example of the playlists avaliable for fans:

Other Indie Bands

ARCTIC MONKEYS
Arctic Monkeys were already massive way before they inked a deal with Domino in June 2005 with sell out tours, masses of fans subscribes to their blog and dedicated fans who knew there lyrics to famous hits such as 'Teddy Picker' word for word. They have became one of the U.K.'s biggest bands of the 21st century and are of course the most popular indie-rock band.

THE STROKES
The Strokes are one of the few indie-rock bands from America that have been just as popular in the UK, the five piece have had international success. Ever since their debut in 2001 they have gone from strength to strengh with a mix of speed percussion, guitars and relatable lyrics.

THE LIBERTINES

Starting off with one aim 'to be the best band in the world' back in 1996 The Libertines showed the public a much more rebellious side to indie rock. Even though they didn't have chart success the bands controversial front man Pete Doherty managed to attract flocks of fans to intimate gigs around the UK.

Indie Music And Pop Rock

"Indie" is short for "Independent" and that attitude of independence, more than anything, determines if an artist is indie or not.

Indie music has been established in the UK in the late 1960's it was first recognised by the bands 'the kinks' and 'the who'. The term indie was for sometime decribed of artists on an independant labels and the labels themselves. The 1980's was a very important decade for indie music the first indie chart was established in the UK and United States and begain to get a proper name within the music industry. Indie music has been a big input into the music industry making artists try out new things and sounds and can range from indie rock and indie pop.

"Pop rock" is a mix of pop and rock music using a catchy pop style with light lyrics, and guitar-based songs.

Pop rock has been around since 1960's when artists and bands started to me rge both of the genres pop and rock together. Pop rock has been showed by many artists in the 1970's Elton John, Paul McCathery and Rod Stewart. There are varying definitions of the term, ranging from a slower and mellower form of rock music to a subgenre of pop music.

Whilst trying to choose our genre we wanted to explore a couple of them before we orginally came up with our idea. Our finished idea was a variety of the two we came up with we choose The Kooks who are an indie pop genre band we decided to do this because there songs are very lyrical and easy to interpretate. The Song we choose was Sway which was there thris and final song of there second album, we choose this song because its not as up beat but not too slow and we found very good ideas to fit in with the song.

Music Video Or Short Film

As a group we have chosen to do a music video as we have a keen interest in current chart music and would enjoy researching other acts to get ideas for our final product. We also did a short crime film last year so feel that we would benefit from trying something differant. Everyone in the group opted to do down the music video path so it was clear which choice was most popular.
All three of us thought about each idea over the summer and came back with more ideas for a music video. After looking at previous videos we're leaning towards pop, indie or soft rock. This is because we are most familiar with these genres of music and would know more about the target audience, codes and conventions of each and what the viewers would expect to see in the video.

The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved Video Analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16nOViwmSJ4&ob=av2e

The Script are a boyband from Dublin who are signed by Song BMG, one of the music companies BIG 4, so this means that the budget for this video is quite higher than others. The Scripts genre is Pop Rock formed in the 1960s is a mixture of pop and rock music and use a catchy pop style with light lyrics, and normally guitar-based songs. The video starts with Danny the main member of the band walking through a big urban city this may show power and dominance. The music video is in narrative which means that the video tells a story throughout it, this is common with most videos particulary indie and pop rock and is mainly a story to do with love and romance and the lyrics play a big part too. The use of shots are ranged, close ups are used the most to show the main member of the band singing also panning is used to show more of the setting around. Another shot that is used regulary is mid-shot so that the background is seen aswell as the member of the band. The performer is used to engage the audience throughout, they have also used shots of the full band together in a parking lot with light lighting, the band is used so you can see there performance to make it more entertaining for there fans. The lyrics play a big part within the video as the lyrics are linked to the video this may be why it is narrative. Near to the end of the video there are a range of fast clips of the band together performing and of days passing by and Danny in rain and snow whilst growing older this shows that time is going quick. They also do a shot of a watch that is being rewinded forward but faster therefore another way of showing time going by. There are also scenes used of moving traffic going from day to night , but speeded up and slowed down.

This music video has inspried our music video by the way it uses the band to engage the audience and the way they have used editting to slow down and speed up shots which adds a good effect.

Paolo Nutini - Last Request Video Analysis

Paolo Nutini is a Scotish singer who also writes his own lyrics making the songs much more personal to his own experiences. 'Last Request' was his debut single and managed to get to number 5 in the UK singles chart in 2006. The song is basically about someone who has accepted their relationship is over but they still want one last night with them.

The video was released in the UK and the US, so it had to appeal to both audiences. This is done by showing celebrations on New Years Eve; something both countries can relate too. Also New Year gives connotations of fresh starts and moving on; this is ironic because the lyrics clearly show Paolo is unwilling to forget the events of the past year.

It starts with a close up of his face so he is singing directly to the audience and adding emotion through eye contact. The white background emphasises how he is feeling and as he is a new artist the focus on him acts as an introduction. There is a black out effect , almost like the person watching him (us the audience) is blinking- bringing us into the video. It also adds a slow pace to the video matching the instrumental.

The camera slowly zooms out to show Paolo is sitting in the middle of two couples kissing. This is an effective way to show how lonley he is and unable to connect to the people around him. The scene cuts to a bottle of champagne opening suggesting celebration and happiness. The blue lighting and mascarade costumes of the party goers add sophistication. The fresh colour blue also juxtaposes the red colour of his shirt reinforcing his inability to join in.
By cutting to other people around his smiling and laughing in slow motion it makes the audience sympathise with Paolo. The shadows on his face link to sadness and depression even though New Years Eve is traditionally the opposite. The camera switches to show Paolo's point of view which is a clever way of letting the audience into the artists mind. He is focusing on happy couples around him; although the lyrics say 'sure I can accept were going no where, so one last time let's go there' I think the song is much more deeper than him wanting one last night of passion. Looking at happy couples around him hints that he wants back in a relationship with the women he misses, and by thinking of her on New Year could mean he wants to start a fresh with her.

A switch of location to the woods isolates him further, in the background people dancing are visibles. Everyone around him, everywhere he goes people are celebrating and he can't escape from this. After ending up at a quiet bar, a black snooker ball in showed being potted. This is significant because it symbolises either the end a game or bad luck, either way it dosen't give much hope for the new year about the start. By sitting at the bar drinking on his own, Paolo is relating to the auidence as most people can remenber trying to 'drown their sorrows away.' For a while it looks as if he is forgetting but one last glace shows he is still searching for her.

The famous mirror trick is used again- something popular in music videos. He looks forward at himself alone and can see a coupke embracing next to him. This suggests what he is now (lonley, heart broken) and what he was before and wants to be again- in love. The champagne at the end opening in slow motion signifies the start of the New Year and as an auidence we hope to see Paolo joining in with everyone. However the video ends with a slow zoom out of him at bar on his own.

I think the video for 'Last Request' is simple, but for a debut its powerful because it shows Paolo as an ordinary person dealing with heartbreak without any glamourisation. As an audience we connect to him and like him because he is singing directly to the camera making the song feel personal. We also sympathise with the character he is trying to create but wonder if his lyrics are from experience.

Jay Sean - Down Video Analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUbpGmR1-QM

I choose this video because it was Jay Sean's comeback track after being signed by a record label Cash Money Records in the USA, I wanted to see if he used his video to show the changes he has undergone to become a better artist. As Jay Sean falls into the R'n'B catergory, I expect to see girls, items showing extravigance and fashional clothes.

The close up of the rose at the start gives connotations of romance however this is juxtaposed with the blue tint of the video. The colour blue stands for the cold, so by having a blue rose it could show that the love there was is now tainted. The spilling of the drink over the rose emphasises the feeling that something is wrong. The lighting effects being dark is very unusual because normally in th R'n'b/ Pop lighting is bright, this shows that they have linked the effects to the narrative in the video.

The mid-shot mirror scene that follows appeals to female fans and links into one of the niche audiences; teenage girls. It also shows his masculinity and transformation from boy to man since being dropped by EMI/Virgin.

This is enforced with the use of his old song 'Stay' playing non-diagetically in the background by stopping this on his I-pod and is also a method of advertising. Many artists are asked by companies to use products in their videos for promotion purposes an example of this is girl band 'The Saturdays' wearing toy watches in their single 'Missing You.'

The next 0.27s shot of the camera gliding around the ballroom gives connotations of extravigance using chandeliers an champagne to convey this. The glow light effect travelling around the room adds a modern feel to the video. After seeing this as an audience we can tell that the video is now set in a party scene, everyone is dressed in monochrome colours to add an element of style and class. The attractive women are the highlight of attention so the midshot of them opening the door for Jay shows how important he is. This is also clarified because he is wearing white which is differant to everyone else and the women are obviously drawn to him because they put his suit jacket on for him making him superior. The inside of the jacket is significant because it is red which could mean that it is either designer or customised.

He continues to sing directly to the camera on an eye to eye level thus interacting to the audience and making it feel like a personal performance. The dance routine shows two things; that he has other talents and by positioning Jay in the middle it again establishes his importance. The video uses colour to make referances to the mood so when it changes from blue to pink it shows love and lust supporting the narrative. Even simple actions like Jay brushing off his jacket could argubally be an attempt at him 'brushing' off the touch of other girls- he is looking for one in paticular. The plot keeps the audience interested and other obvious codes like the RnB dancing make the genre known.

The scene suddenly changes back to blue when he finds the girl he looking for making it see sensual- the tilted frame helps to convey this and shadows add intimacy. As she walks away, he follows proving he is the perfect gentlemen and it also contrasts to the other girls following him before yet she is the only one he is after. The lyrics fit perfectly with his actions an example of this is when he says 'you are my only' whilst gazing into her eyes. More technical effects are used with glitter hovering around the couple.

There is colour swap for Lil Waynes verse - red. Red shows power and danger it is also the opposite of the blues and pinks we've seen so far. The British flag shows Jay is proud of his origin but is also a clever way of relating back to his fans in the UK. He is also aware that being seen with someone like Lil Wayne is good for his reputation and a way of getting onto the RnB scene in America.

'Cash Money' logos projected on the walls is not only adervertising the record label but hints that Jay is happier with his new label. The video end with Lil Wayne and Jay Sean shaking hands so now not only are they collegues but they are friends this puts Jay in a powerful position.

Cry Me A River DVD Cover

Our chosen song was 'Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River' after looking at the lyrics and listening to the mood of the song we made a list of possible settings and other ideas we could think about.

We then decided that the best possible setting would be a place next to a river because of the lyrics and name of the song the mood of the song is quite sad and about a lost love because of this we made our pictures and the emotions of people in the pictures. Most of the pictures we took were potrait but quite close up and we also took a couple of mid shots to establish the background of the river. The main idea we had was a person wearing a pair of glasses with the reflection of the other person in them however this proved to be difficult as we only had two people in the group and didnt want the camera in the reflection/shot. So we took some pictures of the river in the background and some pictures that related to the lyrics 'you took a chance and made other plans' we took a picture for this of me walking away to convey the meaning of this.

After taking the pictures we then went onto the macs to look through our pictures and decided which were the best ones after we decided this we then went onto photoshop and changed the dimensions to the right ones for a DVD cover. I then imported the photos i wanted to use onto photoshop and i edited them to poster edges to make posteristic which i thought would look really good as a cover. I then put the other pictures on photoshop the ones that i wanted to use for the back of the cover i merged these two images together to make an effect it was a picture of an eye and of a girl walking away to match the lyrics.

The final add ons we had to do was all the text and labels i choose to use two different types of font which were both in italicswhich suited the genre of the songs. I then looked at other dvd music covers and noticed they have a tracklist so i then went on the internet and looked at justin timberlakes album list i used some of the tracks but didnt put them all in the same order.
